Glossary

The vocabulary Via Scientia uses for capabilities, evidence, sources and platform concepts. This is the same data dictionary that governs how records are structured.

Capability: A specific technical, scientific, analytical, manufacturing, testing, or research capability that an organization can potentially provide or support.
Equipment-based inference: Evidence where specific equipment or instrumentation is identified that can directly perform or support the capability, even if the organization does not explicitly advertise the capability as a service.
Evidence: The classification describing the strength and nature of the evidence supporting an Organization Capability.
Evidence Hierarchy: The order used to select the strongest available evidence: Explicit → Equipment-based inference → Infrastructure-based inference → Research-based inference.
Explicit: Evidence where the organization directly states that it performs, uses, offers, provides, or applies the capability or method. The capability does not need to appear under the exact same wording as the database capability.
Infrastructure-based inference: Evidence where a relevant laboratory, facility, plant, testing center, manufacturing line, pilot facility, or equivalent infrastructure supports the capability, but no specific equipment is identified.
Organization: An organization represented in Via Scientia that may provide capabilities, infrastructure, expertise, technology, services, or collaboration opportunities.
Organization Capability: The relationship between an Organization and a Capability, representing that the organization has evidence supporting its ability to provide or perform that capability.
Pilot Plant Development: Development, integration, commissioning, or operation of a pilot-scale system used to demonstrate or validate a technology at a scale beyond laboratory or bench-scale experimentation and before full industrial deployment.
Principal Source: The strongest official source identified for a specific Organization Capability and the source used as the primary justification for its evidence classification.
Product Qualification: Formal testing or assessment used to determine whether a product or technology meets predefined technical, performance, reliability, safety, or applicable qualification requirements.
Product Validation: Activities used to demonstrate that a product, technology, or system performs according to its intended requirements or application.
Research-based inference: Evidence where the organization's research activities support the capability, but no qualifying specific equipment or relevant infrastructure evidence is available. This is the lowest evidence level.
Source: An external source of information used to evaluate and substantiate an organization's capabilities, preferably an official organizational webpage, document, or other authoritative source.
Technology Transfer: The process of transferring technical knowledge, technology, know-how, methods, or developed solutions between organizations or from research/development into another application or operational context.
